moonlit dreams

Sorrento: a land of magic and lore older than any alive. Here, wolves from all over come to seek refuge and to try to start a new life. It is a land forbidden to humans, protected from natural disasters, safe from all harm.

At least, that's what they thought.

Then a disease wiped out the vast population of wolves, leaving few alive. The two packs, Samara and Nahal, are now struggling to build back up to the glory they once had. Slowly, they are regaining their former strength. Elementals and normal wolves alike work together now to rebuild their home; even a few of the mysterious, rare Silvers have come to roam the lands. Now the question remains...

SAMARA PACKLANDS

Samara Pack Camp
(1 sub-board)

Possibly derived from the biblical place name Samaria, which means "watch mountain" in Hebrew.

High in the mountains lives the pack of Samara. The wolves here are kind and welcoming, close ties bonding this pack together into a family. The camp is nestled between two towering stone cliffs, and only the pack's members know how to navigate through the caverns and crevices of this mountainous terrain to get into the camp. The camp itself is surrounded by small cliffs, making it very safe from tresspassers. Most of the surrounding land is forested. Snow is common on the highest peaks of the territory, and prey is still plentiful despite the dangerous conditions. Mostly you'll find large animals, like deer or mountain lions, and what few small prey you can find are hard to catch. Birds of prey are always seen flying overhead.

Mortimer Falls

From an English surname which was derived from a name meaning "still water" in Old French.

At the edge of Samara's packlands you will hear the rushing of water. A large waterfall, found in a clearing within the forest, cascades down the mountain into a little pool. The current at the top is swift and deadly; you don't want to fall from that height, for it would surely result in death. The pool that forms at the bottom starts out shallow with little minnows darting to and fro. About halfway out into the pool, it starts getting steadily deeper to the point where you can't see the bottom. The fish also grow in size the farther out you go. The water itself is clear and clean, and it makes quite a refreshing drink. Behind the falls' sheet of water is a little cave, hidden from view; few know of its existence, and none know to where it leads. Perhaps it is yet another entrance to the Abyss Caverns?

Leto Cave

Possibly derived from Greek (letho) "hidden, forgotten". In Greek mythology she was the mother of Apollo and Artemis by Zeus.

The Leto Cave is a large, dark cave hidden somewhere near Mortimer Falls. Creatures of all kinds slither through the cave, mostly mice and snakes, sometimes finding secret entrances to Samara's camp or the Abyss Cavern. Inside, various plants grow from the walls or ground - not just moss, but also other rare plants that don't require sunlight. Flowers grow near the entrance, and two trees block it from view. Only a small wolf could squeeze in through the few gaps that there are, but members of the Samara pack are aiming at finding an entrance that can easily be used without their being seen. Because the hole is next to the camp, it would be a safe place to hide during an ambush: only one wolf would need to guard the small entrance, while the rest of the pack can hide deep within the cavern's depths without fear of attack. Most of the cave still hasn't been explored, but the parts that have are rather spacious.

NAHAL PACKLANDS
[ ]
Nahal Pack Camp
(1 sub-board)

Means "river" in Hebrew.

The Nahal pack is known for their fondness of water; pack members are extremely strong swimmers, even pups and elders. Most are taught from a young age to swim and to love water. Their camp is set deep within the forest, between a fork in the river that runs through their territory, and it is virtually unreachable except for the ones who know where to cross. The current is fast and strong, suited for the members of this pack to swim through, but for no one else. However, air, water, and ice elementals usually find it easy enough to get across the river, so the territory is guarded strictly. Wherever the river isn't flowing through, trees are the main part of this pack's territory. Fish is the main diet of these wolves, but other small prey like voles and rabbits are eaten as well.

Alton River

From an Old English surname which was derived from a name meaning "town at the source of the river".

Nahal's territory contains a river flowing through most of it. A calm part of the river is located in the middle of the forest, where many gather to spend the day. Here it is shallow and slow, a few fish darting here and there. The water is freezing - no outsider, other than an ice elemental, can survive in the river for more than a minute. Nahal's inhabitants seem immune to the temperature, however. There are small rapids further along, and it's best to keep away from that area, especially newcomers and the inexperienced. Many Nahal wolves seem to go here, seeking solitude and time to think. Much to their dismay, however, probably half the pack thinks of doing so, and the river becomes much less of a place for reclusion. It's best to find some other place to go if you want to be alone. One shall learn that soon enough.

Kali Meadows

Means "the black one" in Sanskrit. The Hindu goddess Kali is the fierce destructive form of the wife of Shiva. She is usually depicted with black skin and four arms, holding a severed head and brandishing a sword.

Nahal's territory is spotted with meadows. Due to a fire years ago, so long ago that only the oldest silver elementals can remember, each area is stained black, though everything should have decayed long ago. The magic that the forests hold, keeping the elements strong and letting wolves come in their multiple colors, makes it so that the ashen remnants remain in the meadows, always crumbling into the grass. Now many wolves believe that the grass is growing black instead of green; however, nobody really cares enough to get close enough down to look. Few Leaf elementals have desperately tried bringing the meadows back to its lush, green perfection, one that no wolf alive has ever seen yet aside from those particular Silvers. Most have failed in their attempts, sadly, and their hope and faith is slowly dwindling.

UNCLAIMED LANDS
[ ]
Vidar Forest

From the Old Norse Víðarr, which is possibly derived from víðr "forest" and arr "warrior". In Norse mythology Víðarr was the son of Odin and Grid. At the time of the end of the world, the Ragnarok, he will avenge his father's death.

Shared by all the packs and the largest territory in Sorrento, Vidar Forest is usually inhabited by many wolves at once. It spans from one side of Sorrento to the other, bordering every pack's territory. Tall trees tower overhead, scarcely letting any sunlight through the thick canopy in some places. All species of trees can be found here, from pine to oak to rowan, all thriving here along with other plants and animals. Still, it is wise to stay cautious of what you could be eating or using to help yourself, as a wider range of substances also comes with a greater chance of a certain substance being lethal to a wolf. Prey of all sizes can be found, adding to the effect of a safe and comfortable place to spend the day. But not all wolves share the same intent - dark souls also tread here, finding the dense coverage and large area a perfect place to hide and corner the weak and innocent. Silvers also tend to roam these lands unseen, preferring the solitude of the forest.

Abyss Cavern

Means "seemingly unending".

If Vidar Forest is the largest expanse of territory above ground, then the Abyss Cavern is definitely the largest below ground. Countless caves and tunnels stretch across almost all of Sorrento. Once you get in, you most likely won't ever find your way out - at least, not by the same way you came in, for there are countless entrances, most of which haven't even been discovered. You must be extremely careful not to get lost... although, that's not the only problem you'll face. The many twists and turns make it difficult to tell if someone is nearby. Wolves who get stuck here become desperate... Be careful not to cross paths with those you'll regret ever facing. The occasional mouse might scurry past you, but other than that, don't expect to find anything to eat in here. Through the cracks in the rocks and sometimes dripping from above one can see a thin, steady stream of water trickling. No one has ever really found the source, but at least you won't die of thirst in the caverns upon getting lost. Still, if anything, your best chance of survival would obviously be to, well, get out of there now. Perhaps if you found other lost wolves who haven't gone mad, you could work together and get out... and have some serious bonding time with strangers as well.

Aysu Bog

Derived from Turkish ay "moon" and su "water".

Although most wouldn't think of a swamp as the most comforting place to spend the day, Aysu Bog is probably the safest area outside the packlands. Rogues and loners tend to try to stay in places with a lot of prey - something that you won't find here anytime soon. The water is knee deep towards the shallower areas, but no one quite knows how deep the center is. Who would want to find out? The water is so murky, you can't see to the bottom. Who knows what could be lurking under there... Other than yourself, it is quite rare to find any other source of life. Even the trees look dead. As creepy as it is, if you can stand it, you'll be pretty safe here. Then again, if you're hungry or thirsty enough to take a sip from the water, or munch on any random creature or vegetation you can spot, well then, you're in quite a pickle. If anything, you'll probably find yourself with a terrible bellyache. Spooky, yet still a sort of 'safe haven' for those seeking solitude.

Derya Ocean

Means "ocean" in Turkish, ultimately from Persian.

Once you reach the end of the forest, miles of sand greet your way onto the ocean. The tides are strong in most parts, and only for experienced wolves to dare to wade in. Many make the mistake of trying to drink from the salty water, only to find its taste to be utterly unpleasant. Most loathe the taste of the fish here, too, and the sand is probably considered the only greatest part about it, being your average sand. Still, even a few pups end up trying to see what it tastes like. One can almost guess how that ended up. At both ends of the beach are soaring cliffs, some of which contain caves - only those with wings can reach them. On the far left end, before you reach the cliffs there, the sand turns to pebbles, and large boulders reach out into the water. On the far right, the forest breaks immediately to the ocean, with no sandy shores in between. Sea birds are pretty much the only other animals found here, other than the occasional shark. As always though, despite its downsides, the ocean can appear particularly illustrious at sunrise, sunset, and sometimes even twilight.

Ophiuchus Mountain

Means "serpent bearer" in Greek. This is the name of an equatorial constellation which depicts the god Asklepios holding a snake.

Ophiuchus Mountain lies to the south of Vidar Forest. No pack dared to claim it, and only recently did loners begin to wander there to live. It has hundreds of tiny caves dotted all over it; standing at several miles and made out of rock and grass, that's what would be expected. Its rough terrain makes it nearly impossible to make it to the top. Air elementals can't; the air gets too thin by the time they get three-fourths of the way up. It would take an earth or leaf elemental to break away stones and climb, but no wolf has yet tried. Many young ones are often dared to scale this mountain, and all are never seen again. No one is really sure what lies at the top of the mountain; some think it is perhaps a giant snake or serpent, waiting to reward the wolf that reaches it by eating it up. Others think a great treasure lies at the top, but one would wonder what kind of treasure that would be. More of the mature wolves simply believe that there is nothing of interest at the top, and others are just wasting their time in wondering. It gained its name because each of the caves used to contain at least one snake.

Havilah Clearing

Means "stretch of sand" in Hebrew. In the Old Testament this was both a place name and a masculine personal name.

The clearing is a long stretch of sand at the foot of the Ophiuchus Mountain. It is a fighting place or a training place for all three packs, and loners are permitted to come and watch. Most wolves are challenged to a duel - to the death or surrender. Though many attempt to refuse, the opponent often tries to attack anyway. It really depends on what kind of wolf you are dealing with though, but its best to always be on your guard when in groups. Wolves stop here to rest and hunt before they take a journey up the mountain, to find a home or to try to reach the top and see what awaits there. There are rumors that bears come here and prey on sleeping wolves... beware. There have been few cases of such attacks, but one never knows for sure. There is nothing too special about the clearing aside from being, well, a clearing surrounded by the few trees in the area.

LAND OF THE DEAD
[ ]
Valdis Woods

Derived from Old Norse valr "the dead" and dís "goddess".

When wolves who have unfinished business on earth die, they are sent here. Their souls are cursed to forever roam these lands until they have accomplished whatever they need to do, and then they are gone beyond even these woods. The trees are of various heights, some stunted and small and others tall and soaring, and a light mist always seems to float above the terra. In the center of the forest lies a clearing that can fit all of the dead wolves of this realm. It is a strange and mysterious place, home to the dead. It probably houses many old leaders and high-ranked wolves, but there is no definite leader of the realms of the dead. Wolves are usually on their own here, but of course, they have they choice of finding friends and grouping up and whatnot, unless they'd rather spend their afterlife watching over the living.
00
[ ]
Adva Lake

Means "small wave, ripple" in Hebrew.

Adva Lake lies in the heart of the Valdis Woods. Deceased wolves can come here and look down on their old world; this is also where they can 'fly' down and see their old families, but they are invisible to the living, save for the ones that want to see them. A small stream trickles out of it, but after all these years a wolf would think that the lake would run dry. However, somehow Adva Lake keeps the water, though no wolf has any idea how. It is a mysterious lake, shrouded by secrets and surprises; not the dead nor living know much of it. No one will probably know any more about the lake than they do right now, so if you're the kind to seek out supernatural phenomenon, it'd be best for you to give up and stop wasting your time.
